PET CARE COUNSELLING, HUSBANDRY, PET HOME SITTING
AND GRIEF COUNSELLING FOR PET LOSS
REFERENCES AVAILABLE
Charges depend on services, how they are delivered, and arrangements may be made to pay as you go. Behavioural counseling includes free follow-up service, which can be done by phone. Please check out our website articles for free information, including what a contract for a pet should cover. Occasionally, we will do in home pet sitting for pets that are special-need, and /or require grooming. Costs depend on services. We do not do yard work, beyond flower care, and watering, although we will look after inside plants too. Ask about any other services that you do not see listed here, but are interested in.
PET NUTRITION
- deciphering pet food labels and claims
- allergies and intolerances in domestic pets
- deciding what and how much to feed individual pets
- problems and dangers with homemade diets and diet supplements
- why not to feed raw meat, eggs, and milk products
- debates on feeding elderly pets
- the correct way to weight loss, and how what you feed may be the issue
FELINE BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS:How to understand the nature of the cat, and specific cat breeds (or dogs):
Many pets are destroyed each year because of a variety of inappropriate litter pan habits, biting owners, scratching furniture, or issues with getting along with other pets. Changes within households can stress pets in ways owners can’t understand.
Behavioural problems can rarely be dealt with in a 10 minute appointment at a veterinarian. I offer counseling in person, or by phone, with a follow-up call. Sessions are typically 45 minutes to 1 ¼ hours, depending on the history taking needed. The session fee includes the follow-up call(s) and I can call anywhere in NA, on my phone plan, providing the service is paid for in advance. Nutrition issues can sometimes manifest themselves as behavioural issues.
BASIC CAT/DOG CARE FOR FIRST TIME OWNERS-
Is a cat for you? A dog? Is this the right time, and how do you choose a match for you and your lifestyle? Fundamentals include issues such as these; feeding; training; grooming;, buying supplies; choosing a veterinarian, and how to check your own pet for signs of disease or illness, that require veterinary attention. Please read the “Feeding Cats” articles on this website. If buying a purebred animal, you might also want to read the article on buying a purebred pet, and look at my contract, also on this site. NEVER BUY AN ANIMAL FOR HOW IT LOOKS-you have to live with it too!
GRIEF COUNSELLING FOR PET LOSS-
Many pet owners do not have family members or friends, who understand the depression, and loneliness, that can result from pet loss. Comments such as,” the animal was old, “it was just an animal” can make the owner feel isolated and without support. I charge the least for this service, which can be done in person or over the phone. I strive to help clients through this time, using my own and others personal experiences with loss of animal friends, and my degree in social work.
HUSBANDRY FOR BREEDERS AND RESCUE WORKERS
- understanding the pet's nature, and how it’s past may affect it.
- feeding for long term health and the individual's life stage
- diseases, parasites, and their transmission
- how vaccinations work, and choosing the right vaccine for the right situations
- the dangers involved in having a pet that is loose outside, and the various costs of this
- isolation of new pets
- reducing stress levels in multi-pet situations
- the personality of the individual animal
- the care and whelping of registered breeding animals, and abandoned or feral ones
- dealing with recently neutered cats and dogs
- cattery and shelter set-ups to reduce disease, and facilitate easier cleaning
- reasons why boarding pets, especially cats, may cause problems
NOTE: BASIC GENETICS FOR BREEDERS CAN ALSO BE COVERED
WHELPING --- we will consider helping with this, but prefer to be involved during the pregnancy too, to facilitate the maximum chance of the best outcome, and owners who are prepared for the birth, and what comes in the neonatal period afterwards.

Breeder of Persians for 14 years; helped to develop the cameo Persian colours, off of the silvers, granding a number of cats over the years, and later breeding solid colour dilutes. Mentored a number of new Persian breeders.
Bred the four basic colour of Abys for over 18 years, but involved with the breed much longer than that, and formerly involved in the amyloidosis studies, with the researchers in Milan, and University of Missouri. Also imported from first the UK, and then later, Australia, to increase and improve gene pool, and reduce the coefficiency of inbreeding. Acted as a liaison between breeders in different countries and continents. Mentored new Aby breeders, or others, who asked for help, if I felt that they were breeding for the overall good of the breed.
Member of the Abyssinian Cat Club of America for 14 years, and of The Fawn newsletter for 8 years. Also UK Papyrus and Australia Aby Quarterly, including articles appearing in both magazines.
Former member of the Dog and Cat Writers of America.
Took genetics at the University level, and try to keep current on mammalian research, neurobiology, and neuroscience. Not my only focus, but I do watch out for research, especially in feline health, tests that are available, or tests which researchers are trying to develop.
Former founder and president of Catsave, a feral and abandoned cat rescue group, in the rural area I live, for seven years, including doing the newsletter, liaisoning with similar groups within a two hour drive, working with, and providing foster homes, medical care et cetera. The news letter provided health info, and free classified ads to other groups, and was sent to veterinarians, and a chain of pet food stores that did not sell small animals, from Chilliwack, into Vancouver, BC.
Former member of the Manitoba Cat Club, where I grew up in Manitoba, for 16 years.
